Q1 2026 Smartphone Market: Premiumization Continues as Samsung and Apple Tighten Their Grip on the Global Top 200

Global smartphone shipments reached 290.3 million units in Q1 2026. The world's 200 best-selling smartphone models accounted for 223.6 million shipments, representing 77% of the entire market.

The latest TechInsights shipments data shows a smartphone market moving in two directions at once. Premium devices are gaining momentum in mature markets, while competition is becoming increasingly concentrated around affordable models in the US$100–190 price segment. At the same time, entry-level smartphones are gradually disappearing from the market.

Apple and Samsung Continue to Define the Global Bestseller Rankings

Apple and Samsung once again led the world's highest-volume smartphone models. The Q1 2026 global top ten included six Samsung models and four Apple models, led by the latest iPhone 17 family and Samsung Galaxy A-series devices. No Chinese vendor placed a model in the global top ten, although Xiaomi's Redmi A5 was the highest-ranked non-Apple, non-Samsung device at 16th. The pattern extends beyond the top ten. Samsung placed 16 models in the top 50; Apple had 10; and Xiaomi followed with 9.

Rising ASPs Reflect a Changing Smartphone Market

Demand remains strong for affordable Android smartphones, particularly Samsung's Galaxy A series. At the same time, premium devices are gaining share in higher-income markets, driven by Apple's latest iPhone generation and Samsung's Galaxy S26 family. Those trends are pushing wholesale average selling prices (ASPs) higher. Premiumization is part of the story. The gradual disappearance of entry-level smartphones, as rising memory costs place greater pressure on vendors with less pricing flexibility, is another factor.

The Mid-Range Is Where Competition Is Intensifying

While Apple and Samsung dominate the bestseller rankings, the broader Top 200 tells a more competitive story. Xiaomi, Oppo/OnePlus, Honor, Vivo, Lenovo-Motorola, Huawei, and Realme account for most of the remaining models in the ranking. The US$100–190 price band contains the largest concentration of devices, making it the most competitive segment of the global smartphone market. By comparison, relatively few models compete in the US$500–599 range, highlighting how vendors continue to cluster around either value-focused devices or premium flagships.
