Volkswagen Delays Electric Vehicle Plans

Volkswagen Delays Electric Vehicle Plans

Explore our report on Volkswagen's recent delays of the ID.2all and SSP launch, now pushed to 2029 and the early 2030s respectively, and the implications for battery electric powertrain demand in Europe.

On July 11, 2024, reports have suggested that Volkswagen will delay plans to launch the more affordable ID.2all or ID.Golf compact electric vehicle model (shown as the ID.GTI concept in Figure 1 below, as well as other models based on the same MEB ECO platform) by a further 15 months, from 2027 to 2029. On August 13, 2024, reports have suggested that Volkswagen will also delay the launch of the SSP (Scalable Systems Platform) from 2028 to the “early 2030s” – possibly to 2032. The delays are in addition to those announced by Volkswagen back in June 2023. This report looks at the reasons behind the delays and the potential impact on Volkswagen’s battery electric powertrain system demand in Europe.
