Comparing the Latest 200 MP Image Sensor Technology: Samsung, Sony, and OmniVision

Sensor technology continues to advance as pixel scaling moves toward the 0.50–0.70 µm range, accelerating the race to develop 200-megapixel (MP) CMOS image sensors (CIS). Samsung, Sony, and OmniVision now each offer flagship 200 MP stacked back-illuminated image sensors, giving the industry three distinct implementations of the same high-resolution architecture.

TechInsights has completed a technical comparison of Samsung's ISOCELL HP5, Sony's LYT-901, and OmniVision's OV52A. The analysis focuses exclusively on the image sensor dies, presenting a consistent technical view of three competing 200 MP image sensor designs.

Three Approaches to 200 MP Sensor Technology

Samsung established the 200 MP category with the launch of the ISOCELL HP1 in 2021 and now offers the broadest 200 MP ecosystem. TechInsights has analyzed multiple devices from this family, documenting the company's progression from 0.64 µm down to 0.50 µm pixel pitches.

Sony entered the market with the LYT-901, its first 200 MP image sensor for smartphone camera applications with built-in AI technology. The device incorporates a 0.70 µm pixel pitch, Dual Conversion Gain-HDR (DCG-HDR), Hybrid Frame-HDR (HF-HDR), and a Quad-Quad Bayer Coding (QQBC) color filter array.

OmniVision's OV52A was the first 200 MP OmniVision mobile image sensor analyzed by TechInsights after being extracted from the rear periscope-telephoto camera of the OPPO Find X9 Ultra. The sensor features a 1/1.28-inch optical format, a 0.61 µm pixel pitch, Dual Conversion Gain, and a 4 × 4 Bayer RGGB color filter array.

Identifying the foundry, fabrication process, and salient design features of these devices provides key physical knowledge of technical trade-offs and competitors' capabilities.

Building on Years of Image Sensor Analysis
