Cloud and Digital Services Revenues Continue to Outpace Growth Forecasts
Synergy Research Group, now part of TechInsights, has updated its forecasts for key cloud and digital services. The revised forecast shows that worldwide revenues from cloud computing services, cloud software services, and leading consumer-oriented digital services will grow more than threefold from 2025 to 2031, with the total market exceeding $5 trillion in 2031.
This is an increase from Synergy’s previous forecasts, as actual quarterly results from leading companies continue to surpass growth predictions, which were already aggressive. AI is clearly the driver of accelerated growth forecasts, with leading hyperscale and neocloud companies struggling to keep up with burgeoning demand.
“Since the advent of ChatGPT four years ago, we have now made three substantial increases to our main cloud-oriented market forecasts, which is testament to the fundamental impact of powerful AI technology. Each time, we thought we had aggressive growth forecasts in place, but they were not aggressive enough. By late 2030, we now project that worldwide quarterly revenues from these services will pass the trillion-dollar mark.” - John Dinsdale, Chief Analyst at Synergy Research Group.
Five Market Leaders Generate 65% of Worldwide Revenues
Forecast growth is strong across all regions, but it is notable that the US share of worldwide markets will increase over the coming years, with US-headquartered technology leaders feeding voracious demand from the world’s largest economy. In terms of company revenues, Google is the leader across these markets, followed by Microsoft, Meta, ByteDance, and Amazon. Together, these five account for 65% of all revenues, with no other company coming close to their scale.
The research is based on in-depth quarterly tracking data and analysis of the markets for cloud infrastructure services (IaaS, PaaS, and hosted private cloud services), SaaS, social media, and search. In the second quarter, worldwide revenues from those services reached $497 billion, up 27% from the previous year.
Dinsdale continued, “While these four markets are quite different in nature, they share some common characteristics. Leadership requires a strong global presence, a powerful brand, and extremely deep pockets to fund the huge investments required to stay ahead of the game. It also requires expansive technical infrastructure and operations that are spread around the world. It is no coincidence that the five market leaders account for over 70% of the world’s operational hyperscale data center capacity.”
