Huawei Pura X Max Teardown: Huawei Expands Foldable Innovation with a Wide-Format Design
Huawei is pushing foldable smartphone design in a new direction with the Pura X Max, a wide-format foldable that delivers a larger, more productivity-focused experience than traditional book-style foldables. Measuring over 25 mm larger than the original Pura X when unfolded, the device offers a tablet-like form factor while retaining the portability of a foldable smartphone.
Through TechInsights' teardown analysis, our experts examine the engineering innovations that enable Huawei's largest foldable yet. The Pura X Max features a 7.66-inch inner display, making it one of the first wide-format foldables to reach the market and signaling a potential shift in foldable smartphone design.

To support the larger display geometry, Huawei employs its new Basalt Water Drop Hinge, designed to create a teardrop-shaped bend radius that helps reduce stress on the flexible OLED display and ultra-thin glass (UTG). This approach can improve long-term durability while minimizing visible crease formation.
The teardown also reveals the device's premium hardware platform. The Pura X Max is powered by Huawei's Kirin 9030 Pro processor, distinguishing it from other recently launched Pura-series devices. Our analysis explores how Huawei balances performance, thermal management, and internal layout within the wider foldable chassis.
Photography remains a key focus, with the device featuring a 50 MP main camera, 12 MP ultra-wide camera, and 50 MP periscope telephoto camera with OIS. TechInsights analysts found a compact telephoto camera design that maximizes internal space while supporting advanced zoom capabilities.
Throughout the device, our teardown identifies the sealing elements and structural features that contribute to the Pura X Max's IP58/IP59 dust and water resistance ratings, offering insight into the challenges of protecting complex foldable designs from environmental exposure.
As foldable smartphones continue to evolve, the Huawei Pura X Max provides valuable insight into how manufacturers are rethinking form factors, hinge technologies, camera integration, and display architectures to create new user experiences.
