NVIDIA HGX B300 Server Performance Benchmarking Analysis

How Much Carbon Does an AI-Generated Answer Emit?

The question sounds as though it should have a simple answer: select the accelerator, look up its power consumption, and calculate the emissions. Real AI infrastructure does not work that way.

The Myth of a Single Carbon Footprint for AI

Discover why AI efficiency is ultimately a systems challenge, not a silicon specification.

November 6, 2026

The operational footprint of an inference service is shaped not only by the efficiency of its processors but also by how those processors are used. In other words, the number of simultaneous users, the latency promised to each user, the number of GPUs assigned to a model, the model's numerical precision, the length of its prompts, and the electricity system supplying the datacenter can all materially affect the outcome.

TechInsights’ latest benchmarking data makes these interactions visible. By instrumenting the eight-GPU NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra B300 server with at-the-wall AC power metering synchronized with per-GPU telemetry, the analysis reveals how much work the entire server performs per unit of electricity consumed—moving far beyond theoretical accelerator specifications.

What Determines AI's Carbon?

The carbon efficiency of AI inference is not determined solely at the chip-design stage. It is also determined each time an operator selects a model, serving configuration, service-level target, and location.

Operating Factor Measured Impact
Carbon per Million Output Tokens

At best-measured operating points using Qwen3.5 FP8, the server produced approximately 1.36 output tokens per joule, equivalent to about 0.20 kWh per million output tokens.

Applying a facility PUE of 1.2 and 2026 regional grid-intensity values, estimated emissions per million output tokens ranged from:

  • 6.9 g CO₂e — France
  • 59.0 g CO₂e — Virginia, USA
  • 138.0 g CO₂e — China
Latency Trade-Off

Pushing concurrency increases energy efficiency by spreading power consumption across more work, but too much concurrency increases wait times.

For DeepSeek-R1 FP4, moving from 4 to 128 concurrent requests cut energy per token by ~80%, but pushed 99th-percentile time-to-first-token from 571 milliseconds to 11.2 seconds.

GPU Allocation Realities

Adding more GPUs does not automatically yield cleaner results.

For Qwen3.5 FP4 at high concurrency, a two-GPU configuration produced approximately 3,337 output tokens per second per GPU, compared with approximately 2,074 for a four-GPU configuration. The smaller setup was about 60% more productive per GPU.

The Whole Server Matters

GPU telemetry alone severely understates use-phase energy. Across microbenchmarks, the server components outside the GPUs (CPUs, memory, networking, storage, fans, and power conversion) accounted for 30% to over 50% of total metered wall power.

Precision Sweet Spots

Moving from BF16 to FP8 reduced server energy per output token by approximately 55%.

Moving from FP8 to FP4 yielded a much smaller 6% reduction. Making FP8 a compelling operational middle ground for precision and headroom.

Long Context Tails

Increasing input prompts from 1,024 to 8,192 tokens increased server energy per million output tokens by approximately 84%, illustrating that context length must be managed as a scarce resource.

From Performance per Watt to Carbon Productivity

The executive dashboard for AI infrastructure must evolve beyond installed megawatts, GPU utilization, and PUE to track whole-server power, energy per quality-successful request, and time-resolved grid carbon intensity.

The most sustainable configuration will not always be the one with the lowest latency or the fewest bits—it will be the one that delivers required quality while minimizing total facility energy and operational carbon.

Europe, North America, and Japan are converging on software-centric development environments, safety and cybersecurity evidence, open-source foundations, and cloud- and virtual-based workflows. India is a particularly dynamic market, expected to post the highest growth in the APAC region.
