Texas Instruments (UMC Fabricated) 4377401 GSM Baseband Processor 65 nm Structural Analysis Report
The Nokia 2610 GSM mobile handset contains a base band processor with part number 4377401. The device is designed by Texas Instruments with markings showing that it is fabricated at UMC’s 300mm fab 12A in Taiwan. This report will show how TI has leveraged an external foundry to deliver a key device.
There are some distinct differences in the transistors and dielectric stack from the previous 65 nm UMC device that Chipworks analyzed, the Xilinx Virtex 5 FPGA. TI has adopted a somewhat more sophisticated transistor structure than Xilinx, having perhaps a more aggressive adoption of strain engineering. Additionally, the dielectric stack is more advanced, having a greater use of low-k dielectrics.
